Cannelle et Vanille: A Gluten Free Food Blog

If you are not familiar with Cannelle et Vanille, you should go to their site and explore immediately. It’s a feast for your eyes and your palate as she is both a foodie photographer and a gluten-free cook with a cook book coming out in October. Her about page reads:

“I am Aran, a Basque ex-pat living in the US since 1998, and this is Cannelle Et Vanille, my baby, my blank canvas for creating anything and everything sweet that comes out of my heart. Why the nameCannelle Et Vanille? Because those are the smells and tastes of my childhood and this blog is very much filled with nostalgia.”

Nutrition As Medicine

Veggies

According to a recent post on the Gluten-Free Society blog which looked at the Standard American Diet and added the caution that it is indeed true what they say: we are what we eat, think, drink and do. The Standard American Diet (or SAD) often contributes to disease, and according to a study from Dr. Jaffe, who is the founder of Elisa Act Biotechnologies, which studies the delayed food allergy response. Dr. Jaffe points out that a reaction to food can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 weeks from exposure to occur in the human body.

Ginger-Citrus Grain Free Donuts from Gluten Free Girl & the Chef

As a kid, my grandpa would take my sister and I into town on Sunday morning for April fritters when we would stay with them at the mountain house. There is nothing like a hot, freshly baked donut that melts in your mouth. This particular post from Gluten Free Girl talks about the stories we share over meals, the memories and the experiences. She reminices about various stories people have gifted her with over the years and how they are often tied to meals, and the communities that shared them.

Eco-Vegan Gal reviews Livin’ Spoonful Coconut Curry Crackers

Last week while searching for Livin’ Spoonful’s site online, I ended up finding a great review about our Coconut Curry Crackers on Eco-Vegan Gal’s blog from January. The author, Whitney Lauritsen, said that she had been looking for satisfying healthy snacks (which she defined as being gluten, soy and dairy free, unprocessed, plant-based, organic and low or no salt, sugar or oil).

Gluten-Free Support Groups & Product Reviews

This month I found a fantastic blog for gluten-free living called Gluten Free Easily that hosts a monthly support group on their blog to share great resources and tips for gluten-free living. This monthly group meets in person for those in the area, but also online so anyone can participate, and the hostess creates a lovely welcoming atmosphere, and library of resources available to the crowd. Each month also has a theme and April was pizza and greens, so participants were encouraged to share recipes that related to either of those topics. There is also a giveaway at each meeting for participating (you simply need to provide at least one comment to the happenings of the group).

How to be Gluten-free in College

It’s college planning season as students and families eagerly await their acceptance letters for the fall and begin packing their bags for the long awaited move from home as college freshmen. Heading off to college is stressful enough by itself, without thinking about how to deal with food allergies in a new environment. Celiacs in the House provided a wonderful list of blogs and resources for parents and students to prepare for gluten-free college life.

Make Your Own Fermented Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut Jar

Fermented foods are a new thing in my vocabulary (and soon my diet) and I found this great post on Balanced Bites that not only talks about the health benefits of raw, fermented sauerkraut, but also shares some great ideas for making it at home. To me, this delightful food is reminiscent of summer time and baseball games in my memory, but it’s more than a delicious reminder of childhood, it’s a nutrient dense probiotic powerhouse, according to this post.
The author, Diane,  discussed how probiotics, as found in raw sauerkraut, can heal a leaky gut often due to grains and gluten. According to this post, fiber is not the only way to to support your digestive system. The post also referenced many articles by Chris Kesser, specifically his post on healing a leaky gut:

Hunger & A Recipe for Stuffed Bell Peppers

I’ve been thinking a lot about hunger lately, especially in the sense that it goes deeper than just a need for nutrition and food. Often if we really explore what it means to be hungry, or what we are truly hungry for, we discover the root of our hunger lies in a need for community, nurture and wholeness. I’m finding this to be true for myself as I recently transitioned from a job and lifestyle that was not holistically life-giving. I now have more time (and the desire) to invest in my life from a more holistic advantage which includes returning to my need for a gluten-free way of eating. The simple (and sometimes not so simple) act of eating, choosing what nutrients to put into my body affects many things other than just filling the temporary void of hunger pains throughout the day.
